Please do not remove or edit any of these files. When running
othelllo, make sure the above files are in the current directory.
COMPATABITY:
Othelllo is split into three main sections: Ansi Menu
(OTHELLLO.EXE), Graphical Board (GRAPHICS.EXE), and Computer Artificial
Intelligence (AI) (COMPUTER.EXE). All three of these sections are designed
to be completely interchangeable with future versions. For instance if you
like this version of COMPUTER and GRAPHICS but you like a newer version's
OTHELLLO.EXE, just put the three that you like together in the same
directory, and it will work fine. When registering, if you want more
computer versions but don't want any other benefits, just register
COMPUTER.EXE! Because the files are interchangeable, on the Ansi Menu at
the begginning of the game, there is a window that displays the version
and name of these three exe's at the bottom left.
Note: This system will only work with files version 1.2 and
higher. You may not insert a 1.0 file in this version.
Also: COMPUTER.EXE is not manditory... GRAPHICS.EXE has a built-in
computer version which is activated when COMPUTER.EXE does not exist.
UPGRADES FROM 1.0:
The Ansi Menu for 1.2 is quite upgraded. The window on the right
displaying the current settings is constantly updated. The window at the
bottom has been added to inform you of the current versions of GRAPHICS,
COMPUTER and ANSI (see COMPATABILITY). And of course the mouse has been
added in order to allow quicker access to menus.
The Graphics Board has been upgraded in many ways. First, it
loads the graphics of the board quicker. Also, when using POSSIBLE MOVE,
the mouse cursor no longer flickers. When quitting, an "ARE YOU SURE?"
window is displayed. Also is the erratic play option, when this button is
pressed, the game will allow any move to be valid providing there is no
piece occupying that square. The computer will now also display a "Game Over"
window when the appropriate time comes. When a player must pass his turn
because there are no possible moves, a "Player x Must Pass <OK>" window
is displayed.
Computer AI is completely new. In 1.0 it was built-in to
GRAPHICS, but now it is external. This allows you to choose which
computer AI you find most challenging and use that rather than be stuck
with the built-in. You can however still use the built-in Computer AI by
deleting or renaming COMPUTER.EXE (the built-in is quicker, but not as
intelligent). The Artificial Intelligence used for this Version uses a new
set of filters to place strategic values on the board locations thereby
yeilding a more strategic move rather than "Where can I get the most
peices" type move. We personally find it much more challenging.
USAGE:
To run Othelllo, execute OTHELLLO.EXE in the appropriate
directory. Providing your computer meets the requirements and all of the
files are intact, there should be no problems.
The Ansi Menu will display the main menu, use the mouse or arrow
keys to highlight the desired option. The options are as follows:
Start Game- Choose this to begin the game with the currently set
options.
Players- When choosen, a sub menu will be displayed. On this menu
select the desired player(1-6). And a menu with
the options "Human, Computer, None" will be
displayed. This will set the value of the chosen
player. There must be at least 2 players set to
Human or Computer for it to work. (Yes you can
watch the computer play against itself.)
Board Size- Choose this option to set the size of the board.
Othello accepts board sizes ranging from 4 to 100.
Colors- This allows you to set the desired colors for the
foreground and background of the board when you
begin the game.
About- If you are unfamiliar with the game of Othello, this
explains the rules and strategies of the game.
Quit- This of course quits the game.
Once you have choosen Start Game, the othelllo game board will be
displayed. At this point, move the cursor over the square you wish to move
at with the mouse and click to move. The current player is shown by a
depressed button with the player's number in the upper right corner of the
screen. If there is no possible move for the current player, the computer
will automatically skip the player's turn and go to the next player.
To the right are some buttons, they are as follows:
*LOAD- This loads a saved a game
*SAVE- This saves the current game
QUIT- This quits the game and returns you to DOS. (You may also press
the escape key to activate this option.)
RESTART- This will return you to the main menu.
*BESTMOVE- When you press this, the computer will automatically
move for the current player.
POSSIBLE MOVE- While this is depressed, the mouse cursor becomes
a "P" when over a square which is a possible move for the
current player.
*ERRATIC PLAY- While this is depressed, the computer will allow the
players to take any move providing it is not already occupied
by a player's piece.
* These are options available only when registered.
That's it! Enjoy the game. Also read COMPUTER.DOC for a description
of the computer version levels. Register benefits and order form are located
in the REGISTER.DOC file. If you have any questions comments or suggestions
PLEASE send us a letter to the same address as to register, Thank you.
